Luke 8

Our reading in chapter 8 opens with an interesting aside from Luke. He points out the significant role that women played in Jesus' ministry. None of the other Gospels highlights this. But it's an important statement. Women were not allowed positions of influence in Judaism. They weren't even able to study scripture in the same venues as men, if at all. But that is not the kind of community that Jesus was setting out to build, and the ultimate equality of the Gospel is already showing through.

Next Jesus tells the parable of the sower, the seeds and the different soils. We already looked at this story in depth when we read it in Matthew. It's unique in that it is one of the few parables that Jesus explains, and it challenges us on the issue of our openness to His word. To we allow it to take root in us? Do we allow it to be crowded out by other priorities? Do we nurture the things of God that are growing within us?

Both of the next two brief episodes highlight the importance to Jesus of hearing and obeying His word. Shining the light is a result of letting the light of God's word into us. We are family of Christ as we choose to let His character shine through us through us. We hear and obey; we let His word be expressed through us in our actions.

The final three stories in the chapter are more demonstrations of Jesus' power, His authority over nature, over sickness and evil, and His heart for people. These are all the things that marked the coming of the Messiah; they are also the things that demonstrated divine presence to the Greeks. Here was something new and unexpected. The power of God present in the person of Jesus. This is God reaching down into our broken world, and beginning the restoration that He has promised.
